I’ve had sex with someone who has herpes, what now?

Short answer: nothing

Long answer:

Until you have symptoms, you are considered not to have the virus. There is no test that is suitable for people who are do not have visible sores, ulcers or lesions.

Symptoms are expected to appear between 2 days and 4 weeks after contact, with 4 or 5 days being the most likely. . Most people catch it so mildly they don’t notice symptoms. However, because you are aware of herpes simplex, you are more likely to notice something. See our ‘getting diagnosed‘ page for more about this.

The antibody tests that are advertised are

(a) not accurate enough. Read more about why antibody tests – although sold all over the internet – should not be used. See the third section on this page.

(b) need you to wait for the antibodies to be created by your lymph glands. This can take from 6 weeks up to a year. And as our article about the tests says: one third of people who catch it always have such low antibody levels that the test on them is always negative – even though they had a positive swab test.

Most people have had sex with someone who has herpes. So you are in fact totally normal. You can carry on as you normally would.
